The Malta Weightlifting Association organised the 3rd European Union Weightlifting Cup and the Malta International Open at the Cottonera Sports Complex. Eighteen countries around Europe participated in this event including, Italy, Spain, Slovenia, Sweden, Poland, Great Britain, Latvia, Estonia, Austria, Cyprus, Ireland, Denmark, Belgium, Netherlands and Malta in the EU cup. Turkey, Serbia, Scotland and Malta participated in the Malta International open.
The event started on Thursday 5th with training sessions. The following day morning it was held the European Union Weightlifting Electoral Congress (EUWC) in the Plaza Hotel in Slema. During this congress, Mr. Remco Eenink (NED) was elected as the new president Confederation, Michele Barbone (ITA) elected as new General secretary while Jesmond Caruana (MLT) was elected vice president.
The opening ceremony followed the congress. The Parliamentary Secretary of Sport Hon Chris Agius and the European Weightlifting federation president Dr. Antonio Urso among other dignities were present at the ceremony and gave an opening speech, during which they showed their support towards the athletes and the organization of such events. The competition continued throughout Friday and Saturday. This event also included the Malta International Open Weightlifting Tournament.
In the team classification award for the EU cup was by Poland followed by Italy and Austria. (You can find full results on Results section)
